Books, food & wine

Posted by Website Admin on June 30, 2017

There are some things in life that are a perfect match. It’s long been known that fantastic wine and delicious food make a great couple. Add fantastic books and the wonderful authors behind them to the mix and it’s a recipe for indulgence. Here’s where the wonderful Marlborough Book Festival comes in, held at the end of July each year. The Lodge is a proud supporter of this popular event.

Mario from Cloudy Bay wines, a sponsor of the Marlborough Book Festival

A boutique annual festival in Marlborough, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, the festival has been running for four years and has a very dedicated following. Authors gather at local theatres and wineries to talk about their books, their writing style, their life and what inspires them.

Laughter and tears are the norm at the sessions, as are tasty bites of locally-grown salmon and Marlborough olive oil with handmade bread, washed down with Marlborough wine, personally poured by various local wineries who passionately support the festival.

This year’s festival runs 28-30 July and features 11 eminent authors and 4 journalists from New Zealand and Australia with sessions with everything from craft beer to poetry being discussed, and an art class just down the road at Hunter’s Wines. Authors include emminent poets Emma Neale, Brian Turner and CK Stead together in a poetry panel. Australian dinosaur expert John Pickrell and beer fanatic Alice Gallatley and more. A festival weekend at the Lodge

Can we suggest spending overnight Saturday 29 July at the Lodge during the Festival, where you can enjoy delicious breakfast and lodge-style dinner prepared by our chef and his team, topped off with a generous slice of book festival during the day. We’ll take you along to your festival sessions and ensure you have an enriching weekend.

When you're not at the festival or enjoying the delicious cuisine, there are many reading spots at the Lodge to curl up with a new book signed by a festival author, including our inviting Library, court-yard facing Great Room and fireside in the Breakfast Room - perfectly accompanied by a glass of Marlborough pinot noir.

What our customers say

Extraordinary luxury hotel. This hotel simply could not be improved upon! The building is lovely with an effortlessly elegant decor. We had a large suite with a second room for our son, separated by a huge bathroom. The room was perfect, with just the right amount of flair and panache without feeling overdone. Our bed was extremely comfortable and the linens were fantastic. The whole property has several wrap around porches, which are great for sitting outside and taking in the stunning views of the property, including a small vineyard. The setting is so serene — you are minutes from the local wineries and restaurants but you feel completely away from everything. We went on a tour with the gardener, who showed us the chickens (fresh eggs for breakfast every day!) and beautiful stream and plants. There are lots of citrus trees and gardens on the grounds. In the evenings, we enjoyed canapés and wine in a small chapel on the property, next to a roaring fire. And the food was delicious throughout! We enjoyed our evening dinners immensely and also had very tasty breakfasts, including local preserves and fresh juice. The staff was super friendly and made all of us, including our 8-year old son, feel so welcome. The manager was wonderful and made sure we all felt special. I would highly recommend this location.

Wonderful Surprise. My husband booked us here as a treat whilst traveling around the area. It was a truly lovely stay. We wish we booked longer! The staff is brilliant and friendly - always smiling and quick to offer anything we might have needed. The property - WOW! It is incredibly well cared for and decorated to be current whilst maintaining the integrity and the history of the building (a challenge few people get spot on - they do!) . We will surely be back - hopefully when it is warmer so we can take advantage of the pool and more outdoor activities. Still well worth the stay in the offseason - the wineries are still open in June!

A must stay! This place is incredible - located on a great piece of property very close to the airport and has amazing views. It has great food and wine and the rooms and staff are great people. Outdoor fire place where they host pre dinner drinks every night - a must stay if you visit this area!

My dad and I stayed here for 4 nights, actually it was so good, we extended! From the rooms, to breakfast and dinner, to the grounds and staff, the lodge exceeds even the most distinguished expectations! I have stayed in the best hotels around the world, but The Marlborough Lodge is without hesitation one of those places where you will always remember every detail because they exceeded in every category! Can't wait to return!
